Is Philip Emeagwali A Fake?

Philp EmeagwaliFor a man voted one of the greatest Africans in history, Philip Emeagwali is found wanting.

Ask Nigerian university students who the greatest present-day Nigerian scientist is and they are likely tell you 'Philip Emeagwali.' But who is Philip Emeagwali and why is he famous? He is seen as a supercomputer guru, who programmed sixty-five thousand processors on a Connection Machine 2 (a supercomputer) to compute 3.1 billion calculations per second when modeling an oil reservoir. This was meant to be a feat never before achieved. Thus, all of a sudden, Emeagwali became an icon in Nigeria, seen as an embodiment of the American dream – a refugee child who fled Nigeria during the 1967-70 civil war, finding a new life in the United States and excelling at what he did.

However, not everyone appears to have bought into this fairy tale story. Jonathan Elendu of Elendureport.com digs into the life of the man behind the myth and comes out with the following stark conclusion – it all appears to be false. In his own words "the jury is still out on Phillip Emeagawli [Emeagwali] and his accomplishments." Firmly believing most of Emeagwalis's claims to be untrue, Mr. Elendu asks "Is it greed, ego, criminal ignorance, or in-built self destructive tendencies that lead[s]…people to make claims that cannot be substantiated easily." What are these claims, and what did Jonathan Elendu find out about Philip Emeagwali?

Professor Emeagwali?

Often, though not always, being a world-class scientist demands that one goes through the process of academic research training which leads to the award of a doctorate degree (a PhD, that is). Some researchers go on to become professors. Emeagwali has neither a PhD nor a professorship. Yet, on a magazine cover displayed on his website, he is clearly addressed as Prof. Emeagwali (note that the pictures on his website keep changing). Elendu states that Emeagwali at one time filed a "suit against the University of Michigan for refusing to award him a doctorate degree in super computing or engineering." He further states that Emeagwali's work was not up to the university's standards and he was denied a PhD. Despite an appeal on the grounds of racial discrimination, Emeagwali never did receive the PhD degree he labored so hard to get.

Most Searched-For Scientist?

Jonathan Elendu goes on to say that all websites which speak of the laurels received by Philip Emeagwali are owned by him. There was one time this writer read an article on Emeagwali's website which stated: "Emeagwali is the most searched for scientist in the world." The article made it clear that more searches were being carried out for Philip Emeagwali than Stephen Hawking, the renowned British physicist. Having a WordTracker subscription, through which it was possible to see what was being searched for on the net, this writer did a bit of research on it. Alas! Emeagwali was barely being searched for on the internet while there were non-stop queries for Stephen Hawking. That was the first inkling to the fact that some pieces of information on Emeagwali's website were blatantly false.

A Scientist That Does Not Publish

If Philip Emeagwali is a scientist, then he must have published work in peer-reviewed journals. All top-class scientists do so, and without such one could never be considered for prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize in the sciences. There are very few scientists who choose not to publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals like Stephen Wolfram, the author of A New Kind of Science and head of Wolfram Research. Colleagues never take their work seriously. Having access to a license for SciFinder, a piece of software that allows one to see all published scientific work from every corner of the globe since the beginning of the 20th century, this writer did a search with the name "Emeagwali." Just four results were obtained, all in reference to the work of Dale Emeagwali, who happens to be Philip Emeagwali's wife, a scientist herself. What this means is that Philip Emeagwali has no published scientific work in peer-reviewed journals. Yet on his website, he is called the "greatest scientist of African descent."

Jonathan Elendu also did some investigation in this regard, focusing on Emeagwali's patents, and states: "Claims of Emeagwali holding patents to forty-one inventions are splashed on his websites. We searched for these patents at the appropriate places and came up with nothing to corroborate those claims. Where are these patents registered? Who in the scientific community is aware of these inventions?"

The 35th Greatest African Ever?

New African, a reputable African magazine voted Emeagwali amongst the 100 greatest Africans ever, alongside such people as Nelson Mandela, Wole Soyinka, Kwame Nkurma, Muhammed Ali, Maya Angelo, Martin Luther King, F.W. de Klerk, Queen Nefertiti and Kenneth Kaunda. This writer was opportuned to see the edition of New African Magazine in which this information was published. But what exactly are Emeagwali's contributions or did they rely on information from his website which appears to be nothing but self-promotional, most of which cannot be verified? According to Emeagwali's website, he was voted the 35th greatest African of all time.

So, Who Is Philip Emeagwali?

For a man who is labeled (on his website that is) as the "World's Top Scientist," "An Internet Pioneer," "A Father of the Internet" and "A Great Mind," it is practically impossible to verify almost all of the claims made on his website. This writer is skeptical about the claims of Philip Emeagwali with the exception of the fact that he received the Gordon Bell Award for scientific computing in 1989, which has been verified. Yet, the Gordon Bell Award is $5000 award (probably much less when Emeagwali received it in 1989), though Philip Emeagwali keeps referring to it as the "Nobel Prize of Computing." The bulk of the information on his website appears to be nothing but hype. And Emeagwali, as ever, remains a myth.

Emeagwali's posters are for sale here His fans may want to get some...

This guy is a ghost!!!

Imnakoya,
No.
Emeagwali is not a ghost. Because, I communicated with his wife sometime ago.

I don't want to join another kind of PhD:Pull him Down ranting against Philip Emeagwali without proper investigation.

Chippla can interview him.

You cannot judge him without hearing him.

God bless.

Uhh, you spoke with his wife? I won't ask you for the gist of your conversation, Orinkila...; however, you suggestion is good.

If the guru can come out and make some categorical statements and clear the mystery surrounding his being, and pull some flesh around his essence, that will be delightful.

I have long shared the same view as Chippla, so, in the meantime he remains a ghost in my books, and this is not "PhDing" him.

There goes a typical Igbo guy. Very sharp.

Congratulations,u've just been tagged.
I won't accept a no from you.

Hmm I think the ghost analogy doesnt directly mean his existence.
So talking to his wife does not imply anything.

Anyways the words are out here and there, I hope someday he comes upon them and defend himself with facts. Otherwise he still remains the ghost that he is.

Like Imnakoya, I observed that Art.com, a site I visit quite often, has Emeagwali posters on sale. The posters were meant to be photographed or put together by a certain 'Donita Brown'. Anyone with a bit of clout could sell their pictures or paintings on Art.com, to the best of my knowledge.

While it might sound unfair for one to be judgmental about Philip Emeagwali without first hearing from him, the truth remains that practically all the information presented on his website as facts cannot be verified (with the exception of the Gordon Bell award). I would love to meet someone who has been able to verify such information.

We need to hear from Emeagwali. Any journalist out there willing to assist?

Anthony Arojojoye, please cut out the ethnic crap – I'll respond to your tag.

In my opinion, Emeagwali's so-called achievements remain a hoax till I get to see verifiable evidence.

I think you guys online are even more investigative than our journalists. Nigerian journalists behave like handicapped people.

Nigerian bloggers in the US can reach him.

I realised he was over-hyped only after some years of hearing about him, but even then I didn't think it was this serious. I especially didn't understand how he claimed to be the "father of the Internet" because that's Tim Berners-Lee right?
Posted by Anonymous Seun at December 20, 2005 12:07 PM
The fact that New African Magazine bought into the hype and labeled him one of the 100 greatest Africans ever gives cause for concern. The truth needs to be found out – what exactly are Philip Emeagwali's achievements?
Posted by Blogger Chippla Vandu at December 20, 2005 12:44 PM
Take a look at this description of Emeagwali it speaks for itself.
Posted by Blogger Emeka Okafor at December 20, 2005 12:47 PM
To Emeka Okafor:

This is a Wikipedia article (which could have been written by anyone. Until last week, Wikipedia allowed anonymous editing of articles). However, it corroborates a number of things this blog is trying to say:

1. All claims about Emeagwali originate from his website.
2. He was never awarded a PhD by the University of Michigan.
3. Calling the Gordon Bell prize the "Nobel Prize of supercomputing" is preposterous. It was a $1000 prize when Emeagwali received it in 1989.
4. Emeagwali has no published scientific articles.
5. Emeagwali is not listed on the United States Patent Office database. In other words, he holds no patents.

I would like to state two more things here. Emeagwali's claim that he performed "world's fastest computation of 3.1 billion calculations per second in 1989" appears to be false. Go the Gordon Bell site and have a look for yourself. The winning entry in 1989 was put in by eight reserachers working in the field of Siesmic Data Processing. Like Emeagwali, they used the Connection Machine 2. Emeagwali's price was NOT for performing the fastest computation but for "price-performance" or how economical a computation was.

Emeagwali claims that CNN called him "A Father of the Internet." Follow the link on his website and read the CNN article. It's actually a CNN Students News article aimed at informing students about black (African-American) inventors. The author of the article, Christy Oglesby, simply uses the caption "A Father of the Internet" to describe Emeagwali's supercomputing work on the Connection Machine 2. No mention is made of the Internet or of Emeagwali's contributions toward it development. Yet, Emeagwali uses this information (aimed at students) to spice up his achievements on his website. How sad.

One could go on investigating Philip Emeagwali for ages. So far, practically everything on his website is false.

I phoned Emeagwali Research and kindly requested for an interview with Philip Emeagwali but the lady on the phone told me she could not schedule such and that Mr. Emeagwali was not in the office at the moment. She however promised to forward my inquiry to Donita Brown, the curator of Emeagwali Research.

Not much different from the response Jonathan Elendu got.

Never gave the guy too much thought since as far as I was concerned he never had Nigeria at heart, but this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Emeagwali) seems to corroborate all the statements that he is a fraud.

Good luck to him...

Before you castigate a man who has contributed to the development and face-lift of mankind to which you agree, briefly tell us about yourself, your effort and little contribution to humanity. All you critical and analytical commentators what have you done?Need an answer.

To Anonymous:

Thanks for your contribution. But can you tell me EXACTLY what this man's contributions are. You speak of his contribution to the "development and face-lift of mankind." What are these contributions?

I do not believe I have castigated anyone. I simply attempted verifying if information available on Mr. Emeagwali's webstie is authentic and to my dismay most of his so-called achievements appear unverifiable or out rightly false.

Please do not patronize on those who have contributed to this debate by asking them about their achievements. They have simply aired their views. If you must attack anyone, let it be I, the author of the write-up.

For now, Emeagwali's claims appear bogus and unverifiable. And so many institutions appear to have bought into this charade including the Nigerian nation state, which recently honored him by having his face on a postage stamp.

Hello everyone,
You can all say what you want. Let me ask you. How many white people questioned the invention of their fellow white people? Every achievement of Afrians are always down played by fellow Africans. The scietists in america said he invented this and all he is awarded for it. That is all. If you dont like it leave it alone but dont try to tanish his image. I am Igbo and i am proud of him and what he has done for our people. He is igbo and then Nigerian and then American. Nigeria can disintegrate any time but your tribe remains. He is what he says he is. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT ALONE!!!
ENVIOUS PEOPLE AND DOWNERS!!

I AND MOST IGBOS PRAISE YOUR ACHIEVEMENT PHILIP EMEAGWALI. YOU CONTINUE TO MAKE IGBOS PRIDE BY FIRST FIGHTING FOR US IN BIAFRA AND NOW YOUR GREAT INVENTION.
LONG LIVE UNITED IGBO PEOPLE AND LONG LIVE OUR FUTURE GENERATION OF IGBOS !!! AMEN.

FROM VICTOR OBI
PLEASE I DONT WHAT TO HEAR FROM ANY HATERS REPLYING TO ME, BECAUSE I WONT REPLY YOU IF YOU HAVE NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT THE GREAT WORLD RENOWN IGBO SCIENTIST.

I know you all are trying to be inquisitive about Philip Emeagwali's achievement but rather than criticise, verify. Ronald Reagan the late American president used to say, "trust but verify" when doubting the news he had on the secret spying program of the KGB when the soviet union was around. So " Trust what you are told but Verify", dont criticise without getting needing information.
Posted by Blogger obi 1 biafran at June 22, 2006 11:43 PM
Obi 1 Biafran,

What point are you trying to make exactly? All I did was attempt to verify pieces of information on Mr. Emeagwali's website—most of these I found to be unverifiable. I couldn't care less whether Mr. Emeagwali happenes to be a Biafran, Nigerian, European or Asian. He isn't the only seemingly fraudulent academic I have written about on this weblog.

If you are able to prove my article wrong, then do so. Else, desist from making patronizing and ethnic-based statements, which I happen to have no time for.
Posted by Blogger Chippla Vandu at June 23, 2006 12:06 AM
The problem with the likes of Obi 1 Biafran is that such people seem to think it wrong for anyone to stand up for the truth and expose falsehood.

I had never given much thought to Emeagwali, but it is obvious so far - as the writer of this article and the referenced one has outlined - that there's very little that indicates that he is not a hoax.

I visited his website, and must say that it all reads like an orchestrated campaign.

Since Philip has made certain claims, the onus is on him to backup those claims.

Time will tell, but for the moment,... tut, tut, tut...
Posted by Anonymous Anonymous at April 11, 2007 5:14 PM
If his claims are not verifiable, how would the president of United State talk so much about him without verifying his claims. I believe we should try not to castigate someone who has achieved something. I believe that if u are in doubt try and investigate to a logical conclusion b/4 u broadcast your doubts
Posted by Blogger Bennizone at May 12, 2007 9:38 PM
A prophet is not honoured in his home neither is he recognized in his family. Think about that!
Posted by Blogger Bennizone at May 12, 2007 9:46 PM
To Beninzone:

The president of the United States is not infallible and neither are his/her speechwriters. A follow-up article on Mr. Emeagwali presented on this blog comes to the same conclusion: his claims are unverifiable.
Posted by Blogger Chippla Vandu at May 12, 2007 9:57 PM
The thing which I find patronising and insulting about this whole affair is the notion that we Africans (I am from South Africa) must stand up for someone who claims big achievements, even if he looks like a fraud.

There are real African achievers out there. Why do we have to venerate someone like this?

For example, Kunle Olukotun at Stanford, with his pioneering work on chip multiprocessors, can legitimately lay claim to having sparked the multicore movement, now the mainstream of processor design. He has a verifiable PhD from (as it happens, University of Michigan in 1991), verifiable patents, and a verifiable industrial impact (one of his designs was adopted by Sun and is shipping in a real product).

Do a web search on him and compare.
Posted by Blogger Philip Machanick at June 7, 2007 1:48 AM
Sun may pay or have paid olukotun royalty or its equivalent and apple may do the same for emeagwali who actually programmed each of eight microprocessors to talk to six neighboring microprocessors at the same time which solved a valid computing challenge some time in the eighties. He may have stumbled on the feat but it was a feat nonetheless.

The Gordon-Bell price does exist and was awarded by the ACM even if folks on this list do not know what these are.
